I just picked up a Laserdisc player that has both composite and S video hookups. Assuming the S video to be a better option, I hooked it up using a rather long (10 feet) Radio Shack S vid cable. The pix quality is not very good. I am hoping that I can improve the quality by moving the LD player closer to the TV and using a shorter S vid cable.Does visual quality with S video generally deteriorate over longer lengths? If so, and I decide to purchase a shorter S video cable - are there any brands/models that I should seek out? (One meter cable for under $50.)
Follow Ups:
cable is on a HUGE sale at audio advisor right now, for like 75% off. I have one, and it's a very fine, quality cable.
You can try using double coaxials with "breakout adapters" at each end, for longer s-video runs. I use double Belden 1694a with BNC termination and Calrad breakouts, similar to what Bluejeans offers.
You should experiment with the composite cable as it all depends on the comb filter in the player and the comb filter in the display device. On my own setup (Pioneer CLD-79 and SONY RP CRT) the composite produces a slightly (slightly) better picture. I verified this by hooking up both cables to different video inputs and analyzing still frames. So you can't just assume that "S" will always produce a better result.
Ok - I'll try that too. Should be easy now that I've got the LD player near the TV.Thanks Rico & (thanks for the Miles info too :-)
