HI:
I am currently using a Denon AVR-4802 with a separate triple mono amp for the front channels. It's ok...Is there a better Home Theater processor under $5K?
Follow Ups:
You can often find them for right at $5k especially now that the new versions are out with automatic room-eq'ing. Just make sure it's got V.3 software at the least! It's an AWESOME processor/preamp.
Costs 4.000 and I am sure it is better processing than your Denon, but it has no amplifiers...I am sure other separates will also do better processing than your receiver...

I have a 6-channel analog preamp and may opt to lose the preamp/processor altogether.
Bel Canto
Esoteric
McCormackAll are universal players supposed to have great decoding...

Guess the video capabilities (or lack thereof) make the more expensive options less desirable.I almost opted for an EAD DVDMaster before I decided an DVI-capable player was a must. And then I can get near-SOTA PQ with players much, much cheaper then even the units you mentioned. I would have to skimp on audio though. I'm still wading through the tradeoffs; PQ is the highest priority and money is an issue.
You asked for good internal decoders to use with passive preamps, thats what this players do very well...As for digital image output, they all have at least DVI, not sure about the McCormack, and the BelCanto even has the option of SDI, the best solution with a good external scaler...

the pricetag is way out there though. I also think my FP already has a pretty darn good internal scaler/de-interlacer (I won't really know until I compare though).I would have been seriously tempted by the Esoteric except for it's lack of DVI output.
OTOH, a high quality DVD player with good DACs might eliminate the need for DVI. I just don't know.
I'm leaning towards a reasonably priced ("interim") DVD player with DVI/HDMI and good de-interlacer (Faroudja or Silicon-image based) with brightness/contrast controls I currently don't have with my FP's DVI connection. Later on, maybe I'll spend bucks on a player which includes excellent DACs for multichannel hi-rez and DD/DTS decoding.
Of the players I mention only the Bel Canto has digital output, but there are plenty more...Sound is more important than image to me, and you will not get good sound from reasonably priced DVD players, even used only as transport, but depends on your priorities and system...
