Just won a bid recently on ebay for the original widescreen versions of the Star Wars trilogy on vhs. Thought about laserdisc but I would need to get a player and the only other movie I would want on laserdisc would be the original Blade Runner in widescreen(have the original full screen vhs currently). Was wondering if anyone has somehow made a transfer from LD or vhs to dvd for these movies and if the prologic or surround signal is preserved. I guess the tape versions will have to do. After watching dvd movies on a daily basis and going back to some good prerecorded videos that I have, they still look pretty good!(along with that delicious meaty analog sound). If anyone has ideas as to why Lucas and Scott changed these movies I'd be curious to hear them. I've heard their reasons but I just wanted to hear opinions from viewers. In the Lucas case it's like he just did it "cuz he could". Seems like another example of fixing something that isn't broke.
Follow Ups:
I have a friend who converted the origional movies from laserdisc to DVD and they came out very good. If you know someone who has the laserdisc's.......
I wonder if there is a way to transfer vhs to dvd. You probably need one of those stand alone dvd recorders that works like a vcr. Haven't really read up on those though. Unless there is a way to channel the picture and audio into a computer and use the dvd-r on there. WAIT! Could I make a video cd from a vhs? :)
The trilogy is going to FINALLY be released on DVD in September... go to Amazon....;-)
Ah, but that's the "Special Edition" that Lucas is putting out. Yes, my life is so enhanced by a new song from the Ewoks, a horrible looking CGI Jabba the Hut, Greedo firing first (and missing from point blank range, thus, through Darwinian logic justifying his swift demise based on his pathetic 'skills' as a bounty hunter), and specially enhanced explosions with the stupid horizontal percussion ring...At the risk of retreading arguments expressed far more eloquently and/or brutally than anything I could come up with, when did Lucas officially go soft in the head? He directed 3 classic movies (THX-1138, American Grafitti, Star Wars) and produced some of the classics of our time (including the Indiana Jones movies). Then in the 90s he went insane... the aforementioned edits, Jar Jar Binks, Jake Lloyd (I know he was a kid, but I've seen postage stamps that could act better), and insisting on directing all three of the prequels. Why? WHY!
If only Lucas would wake up one morning, realize that he's soft in the head and offer a limited edition, exorbitantly priced set of the first three movies in their original cuts on DVD with commentary. I can pretty much guarantee those would sell for $150 with some stupid collector's packaging.
Hell, do what they did with the Alien "Quadrilogy" (I guess Tetralogy wouldn't quite work and they had to make up a word for stupid people) set and put both the Director's Cut and the Theatrical Release of each to let people make up their own minds about them. But no, Lucas is so proud of Greedo firing first that he's not going to let the world see how it really happened...
Ok, I really don't care that much. I just thought it'd be fun to rant for a few seconds.
I am proud to say that I haven't even SEEN the 'soft-in-the-head' versions. I did see a couple of stills of those scenes from each movie and that was enough to convince me not to watch them, as they would have taken my beloved memories and hacked them to pieces. It might have been like watching a horror movie.....waiting to see what kind of monster[in this case a crappy CGI add-in] might be lurking behind each corner waiting to frighten me. You don't put imitation chocolate syrup on your New York strip steak. Going from the SE versions back to the originals may end up being like the time when the only copy of your favorite song was on a record that had a skip in it. Then later when you get a good version of the song, your brain waits for that skip even though it never happens! Only these Lucas 'skips' were shamefully put in there on purpose.I haven't seen the dvd of Raiders yet but i'm wondering, does Jones shoot the big swordsman, or does he fire a blank in the air and use the confusion to run away?
That's the special edition though, isn't it? Or as some would call it, the 'bastardized version'. I don't know if I could watch those without thinking to myself..."wait a sec, what the heck is THAT?"
The DVD Star Wars trilogy will be the Special Editions, NOT the orignal versions.George Lucas was quoted in an interview a few months back saying something to the effect that he will NEVER release the originals on DVD, because to him, they weren't "finished" to his satisfaction.
In any event, I'll just be happy to see the darned things FINALLY get released on DVD.
Time will tell regarding whether the originals ever get issued, I guess...

I have the CLV THX pressings that came out just before the AC-3 SE box set but don't know of ANY copies of the movies in their original form that exist in AC-3. Such a shame, I prefer the original movies by a wide margin.
Nope. The films were originally shot with Dolby A analog sound and released in Dolby Stereo and Dolby Surround for home viewing.
Dolby A is a noise reduction system, a more complicated one than the comsumer Dolby B and its children. I believe the original films were in Pre Logic.
I just won the vhs thx originals for $32 on ebay which may have been a deal since two sets that just sold more recently went for $51 and $76. I had to bid about 11 pm though :) Can't wait to see them. I could try and sell my full screen original vhs tapes but those are a dime a dozen on ebay though.
I saw the CLV box set a while back during a stay in Cleveland, and thought that was rather novel of Lucasfilm/20th Century to have released it in that format!I'd think it should increase in value, especially after the DVD set comes out on Sept 21!
So I'll watch out for you on Ebay! Hehehe, Just kidding...
