My VCR is now squeaking so time for a new one. I do have the $40 Apex DVD player but would just assume have both palyers in one box to reduce clutter. Any known problems with this type of arrangement or if there any brands to stay away from? I know recording from DVD to VCR within the machine may be prohibited which is no bigge as my use is for playback only.

I think the DVD side is similar to the much lauded Tosh 3950/3960I've been playing prerecorded VHS tape on the LOTR The bass on the ork battles seems really really good. And the picture on VHS is fine too.
You have progressive scan on the DVD side. All $129 (122 on sale sometimes) at Best Buy.
My brother picked up a Sylvania unit for I think $58 at Sears. I think the regular price on that one is $89. Interestingly that is Hi Fi VHS and component video DVD too
I prefer the Samsung because the Panasonic was a bit confusing to operate via the remote. Also, on some of these players you can get progressive scan out of the component video jacks for DVD playback (nice) but for VHS playback you'll need to use the SVIDEO or RCA composite jack.... or use just the SVIDEO or composite for both DVD and VHS. Not sure if progressive scan is important to you but some of the lower-end models may not have it.My parents now have the Samsung unit as it is easier for them to operate.
...to use here and there - for my sons and such too. They work okay and only run a little over 100 bucks or so.
