I think the DVD side is similar to the much lauded Tosh 3950/3960

I've been playing prerecorded VHS tape on the LOTR The bass on the ork battles seems really really good. And the picture on VHS is fine too.

You have progressive scan on the DVD side. All $129 (122 on sale sometimes) at Best Buy.

My brother picked up a Sylvania unit for I think $58 at Sears. I think the regular price on that one is $89. Interestingly that is Hi Fi VHS and component video DVD too
