I've been experimenting with my center channel and in at least one test I have found that I prefer NOT having the center channel speaker but running the receiver/processor in 'phantom' center channel mode. At least this was the case with a Dolby Digital concert DVD - Norah Jones Live in New Orleans. It was obvious to my ears that her voice was much 'clearer' and more 'present' without the center channel speaker. I wonder if this is often the case or could it be a mismatch in my center channel amplification vs the main front Left and Right channels? My main Left and Right channels go through a PS Audio HCA2 stereo power amp while the center channel is coming direct from the Denon 3803 receiver. Yes, I did level match all channels and even experimented with turning up/down the center channel level - but in the end, I preferred not having the center channel speaker at all. Also note that the center channel speaker in my system is of the same brand and closely matched with my left/right main speakers - they all share the exact same 8" driver with integrated 'coaxial' tweater.
Your thoughts and opinions please. Thanks!

I think it depends on the mix and how much they actually use the center channel. If you speakers image well which mine do I have had the same thing happen depending on the disk. I have also had it go the other way. In general I just go with the center and not worry. Even if it sounds "better" without it still sounds just dandy with.
It doesn't sound bad with the center channel speaker, just better w/o it. But of course this was only a brief experiment with just one concert video DVD. I should try again with other discs with more center channel content to see what happens. It just floored me though when I found this particular disc to sound better w/o the center speaker. I thought to myself... why have that ugly center speaker sitting on top the TV if I don't need it. Well, maybe I do need it. More tests to follow.

I have an all Magnepan and all channels are driven by one multi-channel amplifier. After living a year with the Maggie CC-3 center
I too experimented and now have no center. Even though the sytem is all from one manufactuer I believe that there is a slight (slight)
discontinuity between the center and the left and right fronts. Now that the center is gone the front sounds are better centered on the screen and dialogue intelligibility is improved. These improvements are slight but definitely there.
With DPLII I sometimes prefer no center, but with DD 5.1 or DTS my system always sounds better with center on, even when I had a lesser, still not bad, center speaker...

My only question, is what you are hearing the result of the lower quality of the Denon vs. the PSAudio power amp? However, let your ears decide what works for you.
Have you tried sitting at the most off-axis viewing position of your display, and playing a movie with lots of center dialog (the majority)? If this works for you than you're lucky, as I would think this is a simpler setup. Is your center the same height as your mains? With my center sitting on top of my 64" RPTV, it is way higher than the L/Rs. I tried the phantom mode hoping for great results, but wasn't able to due to presently owned non-shielded speakers and a large wide viewing area.
