After over a year of flawless performance of my HK AVR525 receiver, the unit can't handle loud transients in DVD movies... the center channel gets knocked out
Any similiar experiences? I may have to shiop for a new, more robust (more power and reliability) unit soon. Suggestions are welcome.
Follow Ups:
If you listed your system. Speakers especially in this case.
Center - M&K MX700 (8 ohm)Fronts - Avance Elipson 680's (4 ohm)
It's actually the S125C
The S125C is rated at 4 ohms according to the M&K website. If your receiver is rated only to 8 ohms (which as far as I can find on the HK website, it is) then this is probably your problem. You could do any of a number of things:
-Get a more robust receiver
-Get a separate mono amp if the receiver has preouts (I didn't check while I was there)
-Get a center rated at 8 ohms
-Zero formers may work also (no affiliation nor do I really know much about them, but they may be your cheapest fix)
I did try a seperate tube mono amp, without success.
Even when using a separate power amp using pre-outs the center channel goes out on loud transients? Maybe the center has a "breaker" of sorts???? Either that or your receiver is having some sort of problem as it shouldn't "see" the 4 ohm load using a separate power amp from the pre-outs. It does have pre-outs, right?
No
Yes
Hey, did you check your connections?
Does the HK indicate a circuit fault or clipping?
Are you using the optical or digital coax?
Does the speaker sound ok, at the times it does play?
Whos make is the center?
Have you tried switching the center with one of your mains?
You shouldn't have to buy a reciever every year or so, unless this is some ploy to upgrade %)

Are you using the optical or digital coax? OPTICAL

So the problem exsists with one of the Avance Elipson 680's (4 ohm)at the center position?
If the mains are not shutting down with the normal configuration, I'd think the impedence is not the issue here, as they are also rated @ 4 ohms.
A cheap test with a coax replacing the optical could reveal a problem with the optical connection. Have you tried this?
Does the H/K have a discrete center channel volume control? If so, where is this set?
Which input terminals are you using on the center?
What guage is the center channel speaker wire and how far of a run is it?
So the problem exsists with one of the Avance Elipson 680's (4 ohm)at the center position? NO, Epsilons never shut down

A cheap test with a coax replacing the optical could reveal a problem with the optical connection. Have you tried this? No, are you suggesting that the optical cable or circuitry for that optical connection may be at fault?
Does the H/K have a discrete center channel volume control? NO If so, where is this set?
Which input terminals are you using on the center? The "regular" center channel outs (using the HK's amp) .. I've also used a seperate tube amp to power the ctr channel with no success
What guage is the center channel speaker wire and how far of a run is it? Don't know exact guage but it's Monster XP® Clear Jacket - Compact Speaker Cable - about 3 foot run.
Sorry I missed your reply to my questions until today, as I had seen your newer post reguarding a new reciever.
Yes, I think you should at least try the digital coax swap. I've heard of strange instances were some fideling has revealed a problem.
I had also seen on the M&K www. that your center channel has a choice of 2 *inputs* ; regular and maximum output. Which configuration are you using?
It is however, sounding like that center is the rat in the kitchen. Especially since the problem doesn't happen with one of the Avance Elipson 680's at the center position. Have you tried the M&K in the L or R *main* postions?
Nope
Maybe you did some damage over a period of time to the amp section.
Center is rated 8 ohms ... amp is 8 ohms as well
