Absolutely go wide screen. Each day sees more hi def broadcasts, which are always in wide screen (16 x 9). Even some of the analog channels (mostly PBS) broadcast wide screen programs. Before long, almost everything will be wide screen.Though a bit more than your $1000 budget, SONY makes a series of CRT rear projection sets that have a good picture our of the box and a great one when ISF calibrated.

I have a Sony Hi def set, 34' diag that I bought in '99. It is a tube set and has a wonderful picture, even on standard broadcasts. Widescreen dvd's are great, I wish they had the HD widescreen dvd's out...
