I am a newbie in the high-def video arena, having chosen up to this point to focus on audio. Recently, I bought a Samsung HLP-5063W 50" DLP set and also upgraded to a high-definition DirecTV satellite. After all the installation and setup, I notice that the SD satellite picture is not very sharp with some channels quite fuzzy. However, the high-def channels look awesome. I am using a Monster DVI cable from a Samsung 360 high-def box to the TV. Also noticed that neither the optical nor the digital coax connections work, which means I don't get digital sound.
DirecTV's tech support has been totally useless. Had them check the signal strength and according to them it looks fine. The fact that DVDs look fine as does the high-def, I am thinking it isn't the TV set itself.
It is always worrisome when the 10 year old 27" Toshiba TV in the bedroom looks better than the new 50" widescreen. Watching soccer on Fox Sports World is horrible and I am a big soccer fan.
Follow Ups:
I have the same setup and, coming from a Proton 27" tube which always had a sharp picture, was initially disappointed. It's not the TV - the great HD and DVD pic quality proves that - you're just seeing low-rez video stretched out over a much larger screen. Me, I'm just praying for a rapid increase in HD programming!
that's disappointing to hear. That will take some time to re-adjust.Do you have audio tracking problems with your Sammy? I notice that the audio and video will not match on DVD's. That's highly annoying.
I have it sometimes on HD, particularly network programs - the show itself is OK, but when they cut to (SD) commercial, the dreaded sync problem rears its ugly head. So far, no problems with DVDs or VHS sound.
