If you've let home theatre pass by unnoticed, wouldn't know 5.1 from Dolby, in short haven't got a clue about the various standards, formats, or whatever ... what would be the best way to get a primer without relying on a video mart salesperson (I admit to being ignorant ... but not stupid)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's a book that should be pretty good, I read his stereo version years ago. Plus check out the other books listed. For that matter, just google " Guide to Home theater", you will get around 11,700,000 results!

If you go to the Dolby and DTS websites you can pick up a lot about sound there. And the Widescreen Museum web site will teach you a lot about film formats.
