As a follow up to me earlier post: http://www.videoasylum.com/ht/messages/19701.htmlI went ahead and replaced the HK with a new Yamaha RX-V2400
Within 5 minutes, the center channel shut down.
Now, I suspect the center speaker. Setup is:
Front L&R - Avance Epsilon 680's (4 ohms)
Center - M&K S125C (4 ohms)
Rear L&R - B&W 300 series (8 ohms)I spoke with M&K last week and was informed that there is nothing in the speaker that would cause it to shut down on overload, etc.
Now, I'm truly lost ......
One other question: It is alleged that Yamahas can handle 4 ohm loads, but in setup you can only select 8 ohm or 6 ohm. How should I set it ... given my "mixed" load?

Hey again, I had another question, later in that post, that asked what configuration the *M&K* was wired, relating to the inputs on the rear. There seems to be several ways to go. Normal or high output.
Given the two options for impedence, I'd opt for 6 ohms.
It sounds like there is a problem with your centre channel. The speaker driver or crossover may have a short in it someplace, which would explain your problem. Try another speaker & see if it works. Hopefully you have not damaged your receiver.

It could happen in several ways...the speaker was overloaded, the amp did something odd that damaged the speaker, age/parts failure, manufacturing defect, etc. I have seen the odd thing slip past quality control, one never knows.

One more question?
The HK AVR525 would "shut down" the Center (I've had the M&K center since July 2003) after a loud transient starting about 2 months ago. (Ive had the HK and M&K working fine together for over 15 months with no problems) I'd power off the system and power back on ... most of the time it would be OK, until it hit the transient again. Sometimes, after a powering down/powering up, the center would not come back (sometimes it would come back 15 minutes after powering up again). When I hooked up the new Yamaha receiver this weekend it was going fine for the first 5 minutes, then boom .. no center ..... does this scenario lead you to beleive that it's any particular suspect (of the ones you've suggested) as opposed to any other ??

is there is something wrong with the speaker! You should try another speaker in that spot to see if the problem reoccurs. In terms of determining specifically what is wrong with your centre channel speaker, that is a job best left for the techs. If you have a multimeter, you can do a basic check to see that the circuit in the speaker is complete. If you don't know how to do what I just suggested, then take the center speaker back to dealer & describe your problem. Or contact M&K directly.

I tried an 8 ohm center speaker and it works fine .. beat it to death with Terminator 3 last night and would not shut down.UA
So either the receivers you use do not like 4 ohm loads or there is something wrong with your M&K center. Either way the solution is to change speakers.I tend not to like most receivers because the power ratings are "optimistic" and they lack the power supplies to properly drive speakers.
