as a corollary to my question to Joe below, does anyone know if watching DVDs on a computer (via a DVD-ROM or writer) has region blocking?
I've never had a DVD drive so have no experience with it, and am just starting to research this. What software is recommended?I'm setting up my "old" AMD K6-2 550 MHz based computer as a music server to be hooked up to our HT system and wondered about this extra possibility.
As I mentioned, we're interested in playing other region DVDs.
I need to get a DVD burner to archive a bunch of scientfic data at some time, so maybe the proverbial 2 birds...?
Follow Ups:
How to do it depends on the manufacturer of the PC DVD drive. There are hacks for computer drives and most can be downloaded and this info is used to update/flash the drive to Region-free status. You might want to check some PC forums and do a search on the drive that you're interested in to see how easy (or complicated, depending on the manufacturer) it is to do this.
though it's not free!
Comments on the appropriate forums seem to find it works with about ALL
drives. This isn't true with many of the software programs/hacks.There IS a wealth of info with a few mouse clicks.
thanks, Joe.
Have it, works great. I use it in conjunction with DvdShrink to make region-free versions so that I can take it to the big screen.
