I have a Mitsubushi 35" TV and two S-VHS VCRs. With playback of most prerecorded tapes, the top 3-4 inches of the picture curls to the right. (With one machine, the image sometimes "moves around" the screen as if shot by a hand-held camera.) At first I thought it was the first VCR, but it looked fine on the monitors in two different shops -- with the same tapes. Also, one VCR displays "static" on the screen; I had this fixed once (no, not a matter of head-cleaning), and it came back like a bad cold. Have tried changing cables and location of VCRs. Is it something in my TV? Anybody know? Signed, Going Crazy in Ohio, or VCRless Until a Cure is Found. (No problem playing back DVDs, by the way.)
I purchased a cheap sanyo HIFI VCR, and guess what the top 10-15 lines on the screen I had the same curl while I put in Forest Gump. I played with the tracking to no avail. In the manual they state "this is due to copy protection on some rental movies or when seen on an older TV". Sure enough all other tapes in my collection were fine. By the way I have a new Wega that does not CROP any of the picture away, This could be the reason on lesser TV you do not see the curl.If I play the same tape on a JVC VCR and TV the picture is fine.
Good Luck
