Just read at the digital bits site that Universal, Paramount, Warner and New Line have OFFICIALLY announced that they will release movies on HD-DVD. So this leaves Sony (Columbia Tristar and MGM) in the Blu-Ray camp, with Dreamworks, 20th Century Fox and Disney still undecided. I don't know about you guys/gals, but I'm not touching either one of these formats until one completely dies. After the whole dvd-audio and sacd fiasco I'm fed up with dual formats. That's it! No more! If they would just work together and have one format I would jump on it immediately, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. But, I'll just stick with dvd and let them fight amongst themselves for a few years. Who's with me?

Thanks for the info. I could not find it on the site you mentioned but it is in the link below.Agree with you, most frustrating. I had hopes for agreement when they both adopted the same audio and video protocols with the only real difference remaining being the physical layer (0.6 mm for HD-DVD but 0.1 mm for Blu-ray).
However Sony has a track record of stubborness - look at the way it persevered with Beta long after it was obvious the VHS camp had prevailed. Their ownership of studios just about guarantees they will hang in despite what anyone else does. Like all such previous situations, it will be a fight to the death. Maybe Sony are winning the SACD vs DVD-A battle but that is no great economic prize.

You can have as many formats as you like, but is any of them a STANDARD. I can make format of my own, you can too. But to make it a standard is a bit bigger game. When something becomes a standard that means you MUST respect it. Look, 4:3 is a standard, widescreen is NOT. If someone advertise something to be 4:3 it means it MUST be that or you bring them straight to court. I can make my own DVD print Widescreen on it, and make it to look like anything I want.
Formats are useles stupid ideas to get people into game (it works), and we should NEVER buy anithing that is not standardised. When CD was about to become reality, it was a big question who will set the standard Phylips or Sony. Sony lost their standard, and now any CD that has that logo MUST comply to standard.
I say we just stop buying any CD or DVD for 1 month and let entire industry colapse, and then they will be begging us to pay $1 for package of 10 CDs and yet get 2 free DVDs. But we are stupid so let us be screwed.
Hi: Nothing new in that area. Format wars started from the beginning of record sound & pictures. It just keeps happening over & over again. It is wise to wait it out & see what happens. But in my mind, the studios risk killing off both formats because too few will pay for them to make them viable.
DVD was a huge success, and quickly, because there were no competing formats.Lesson NOT learned. Scores of years of technology licensing are at stake, so neither side is prepared to give in on HD.
The other reason that DVD was a success was that the price for both the players & media fell quickly. Heck you can pick up movies for under $10 & players for under $50! No such chance for the High Definition DVD formats. Besides who has a HiDef TV? Relatively few people is my guess. For any format to succed it MUST be used by large numbers.
