DVD was a huge success, and quickly, because there were no competing formats.
Lesson NOT learned. Scores of years of technology licensing are at stake, so neither side is prepared to give in on HD.
A pox on them all.

The other reason that DVD was a success was that the price for both the players & media fell quickly. Heck you can pick up movies for under $10 & players for under $50! No such chance for the High Definition DVD formats. Besides who has a HiDef TV? Relatively few people is my guess.
For any format to succed it MUST be used by large numbers.
