into the videophile camp?
Im sure most of us here are audiophiles looking for some guidance in the video world.
I recently had a few bucks to spend and was thinking of upgrading my audio system. Instead, and Im not sure why, I decided to go with a 57 inch Sony crt.
The other night I rented a DVD and spent the next couple of hours watching a nice movie with my wife and daughter.
I could tell that this unplaned purchase was greatly enjoyed by them as well as myself and to think I was going to buy another piece of audio gear so I can go listen to music...... alone.
Money well spent, I'll say.
Follow Ups:
A Stewart screen/DLP projector combo followed soon after with a complete 5.1 speaker replacement.... I compromised MC hi-rez to support a "screen-friendly" non-identical-to-mains" center speaker. At the moment, I'm still waiting for my new MC hi-rez/DVI-capable Universal player to show up in the home (hopefully, before "Return of the Rings" reappears in it's latest incarnation), so I'm concentrating on 2-channel music at the moment.
I bought a 50" plasma for the expressed purpose of letting me use a floorstanding center channel for MCH audio. I must admit that, since then, I watch a lot more TV than before. Kinda mindless enjoyment but enjoyment, nonetheless.
I just sold my Oracle Delphi MkV, EAR 834P and VPI 16.5. I love the sound of vinyl, and have a very large collection, but the gear spent most of it's time collecting dust. I bought a Panasonic 42" plasma. I have no interest in 5.1, etc., so I have my Pioneer 47Ai Universal player hooked up to my stereo. I may get a subwoofer.
I have added video/HT to my two channel system. I did it on the cheap & I am generally happy with the result. As others have mentioned it is easier to involve others as few people actually listen to music anymore.

In 1990 after 35 years of being an audiophile I stared assembling a Home Theater (separate) and learning about video and film sound. In the ensuing 14 years I have evolved into my present all Maggie system which is now combined (four 1.6's with phantom front and rear center channels). I prefer DTS for 5.1 material (my NAD pre/pro makes it 6.1) and Dolby Pro Logic II Music for everything else (LPs, tapes, laserdiscs, FM, and those few DVDs with Dolby 2 channel sound). So quite a change for a died in the wool 2 channel guy.I spend about half the time listening to music and the other half watching films and concert videos.
I'm moving my Maggie 2-channel setup to a super-deluxxe-o MGMC setup with drop-down CRT front projector. I can only do 5.1 due to my room layout, though I may put an upward firing 6th-channel speaker between my couch and wall and see what happens. This should actually improve on my current 2-channel setup. The MGMC1's I demoed sound a lot crisper than my old 1.4's, and, though the midbass won't be as nice with a subwoofer involved (I'm building a custom sub for the maggies) the overall layout of the speakers and furniture should be better acoustically.
This is a good time to do video. The current AV gear coming out is priced so low you can get really nice used stuff for cheap. My whole video front-end is going to cost me about $3,000, which, when new three years ago, would have run into the high $20's. It's still really good gear, just not "state of the art." I think it will crush anything out there right now for under $20k.
/*Music is subjective. Sound is not.*/
I did 3 years ago, most people will be happy to watch a concert in almost any AV, not many care to hear a CD in our exoteric hifis, so I built a very good sounding AV from scratch, wich has been improved a bit since, of course...

Yep, I'm making the move. However I'll still have a great 2 channel system - but more will enjoy my new setup (if I ever finish building the home theater). In my case, I'm going with a projector on a 108" diagonal screen w/ 7.1 audio.
My family doesn't really like it when I fire up my audio system b/c it's usually a man-man sport and b/c of the "noise." Mainly I get complaints I don't spend enough time with the family. What's a music lover to do when you already work 70 hours a week?Getting a 60" SONY RPLCD TV with HDTV satelite receiver(free) and 1080i upconverting DVD player($160!) was GREATLY appreciated by everyone in the family. It's a group sport and gives family chance to do something fun together. And hey, I LOVE movies, too!
now don't be afraid to invest in a decent A/V receiver. On the advice of Joe Murphy on this forum, I bought a Yamaha HTR-5760 receiver recently, and it's excellent! Thanks, Joe!As a strictly two-channel, tube/vinyl man, I feel no shame in admitting that this was a significant upgrade over my old Pro-Logic receiver. For one thing, I can understand the dialog now!
I believe I made a good choice also. I came close to buying the 55 inch Mitsu but happened to come across some comments on the internet about the Sony. Lord knows you cant properly demo a set at Best Buy, CC and the like.
Im already set for 5.1 for now. I had prior to the Sony a HK receiver, Panasonic DVD, Mirage center & surrounds and Hsu sub. Next move would be a DVD player with DVI/HMDI connection as well as ISF calibration or DIY Video Essentials.
Should be fun.
If my audio investment was part of an A/V system, it would be enjoyed (and approved) by everyone else in the family. If that's a Hi-Def display, get some high definition signals to it, if you haven't already. You'll see that's video's answer to high-end audio.
I believe now, more than before, that HT/Multichannel is the future.
Any brick and mortar store that doest embrace HT ( obviously, many are and at the expense of 2 channel) is doomed.
That sucker must weigh 500 pounds! - I got scared off with the 34 inch Sony that weighed close to 200 pounds!I opted for the 32 inch Samsung LCD FlatPanel. - Time will tell if I think my foray into Video Land was worth it. I know I'll be kicking myself when I see my TV for half price 8 months from now! :-(

More like 200pounds. Thank God its on wheels :^)
I really wanted a big screen and 57 inches for a plasma, lcd or DLP
is mucho, mucho dinero.
If you can overlook the bulk, these sets are a bargain.
