I am assembling a home theater (home theatre here in Canada) system on the cheap from small speakers I have in the house already. I have a pair of Tannoy PBM 6.5 monitors for the front mains. From reading this forum, I get the impression that it is important to match the tonal quality of the center (or centre) speaker to the front mains. Here are the specs:
Woofer: 6½" injection molded cone with nitrile rubber surround
Tweeter: ¾" polymide soft dome ferro-fluid cooled
Frequency response: (±3dB) 55Hz - 20kHz (-10 dB @ 40Hz)
Peak Power Handling: 100 Watts
Impedance: 8 ohms (4 ohms minimum)
Sensitivity: 91dB (88 dB anechoic)
Crossover Frequency: 2.3kHzAny good advice on a match for these would be appreciated.
Follow Ups:
I use one conventional acoustic suspension (or bass reflex) speaker for my center. It is an older model AR that is basically the "top half" of the AR floor standers on the left and right.
The drivers are identical, and being a vertically aligned speaker (as opposed to a horizontally aligned TV-top speaker) I avoid any "lobe" effect that can be common with a typical center channel speaker. Placement can be an issue, but I have mine directly underneath the screen and slightly tilted back to properly align with the fronts. Picture a three-dimensional triangle with the convergence point at the listening position. Good luck-Rich
An center speker identicl to the left and right front is recommended. Second to that is a speaker from ther same company which is "voiced" the same. I myself prefer a "phantom" center channel.
I have Tannoy main speakers with 8" drivers. The center channel speaker is also Tannoy with the same drivers (but smaller speaker box so it doesn't crush the TV!). Like Rico mentoned, the other option is to NOT use a center channel speaker at all. Try 'phantom' center channel and see how that works for you.
