I consider my stereo system and music tastes audiophile. many would disagree. Never the less, back in the early 90's I purchased one of the 1st Dolby Pro systems for video. 3-4 years back, I was ready to try the newer decoders via a midpriced receiver route. Every piece of hardware that I brought home sucked...horrible sound! I tried almsot every popular brand.Disheartened, I simply hooked up my old dolby system, and was once again very pleased.
Well, about a year ago, I bought a huge hdtv - Hitachi Ultravision. Reluctanty, about a month back I decided to buy a Harman Kardon AVR235. I pre out from the 235 to amps for my fronts and sub. The 235 handles the surrounds and rears.
Long/short: The system is fabulous. If you are like me,e.g., mainly a stereo audiophile, but desiring a less than perfect/pricey home theater, try the 235. not only does it do a more that satisfactory job, it has so many features and capabilities to play with that it is worth its price for that alone! Perhaps in the years that have pased since I last tried out dsp's and decoders, all similarly priced systems from the various makers are as good. I know that the 235 is certainly worht a try given my above comments. I must confess that I liked it initially for its asthetics alone, then after looking at a few specs decided to try it. ---can be had for around 360 - 499.
note this: I am using diffrerent pairs for each location, plus a non-matching sub and center. gotta b fun. 235 allows easy xover settings, db and distance adjustments for each...e.g., all 8 speakers. and more.
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the post.I'm looking at the HK235 as well as at the Pioneer 1014.
One question. Are you feeding the 235 with the analog outputs of your DVD player or of the TV tuner? Or are you feeding it with the digital outputs? If so optical or coaxial?
Mel...My DVD is connected via coax...you have analog or optical options as well and can connect analog and digital simultaneously on all source.
SAT audio via optical.
TV tuner not connected. I pre out from 235 analog to T V configured and designed for center speaker.
you can component video into the 235 from 2 sources, and one componennt vid out by standard component vid connects (rca jacks - u can usw rg6 minimum coax w/ rca plugs).
Wow, I'm planning on buying one of these today for my son. Took him around to pick out a new receiver, the old NAD amp he was using finally died. Even though there were other receivers out there with higher rated amplifiers, we both really like the way the H/Ks look and feel.He is starting out using this unit to drive a set of HSU satellite speakers w/sub, we were originally looking at the 135. But I talked him into the 235 because of the pre-outs for future upgrades.
The H/K 635 is supposed to be a nice unit, at a much higher $$$, with a decent room correction feature. The only problem folks are reporting is a surround sound quirk, where if a digital source switches from DD to pro-logic IIx, then back to DD (as in using a Hi-Def sat/cable box), the unit locks into DPLIIx and has to be manually set back to DD. Have you found this true with the 235 also?
......the 235 has all those neat room correction features as well!
Wow...I'm not sure that I have had it long enuf to know! You can set up the unit to auto select the type of digital signal that you receive, or you can nmanuall set up the signal. you can set each source and within each source customize the dsp.So, on my SAT when a dd signal is present, I have customized the dsp for DD+Dolby PLIIx, which gives me all eight speakers blowing. So far, any manual work that I have done I have chalked up to the learning curve. Sorry I cannot answer more speciffically, but a kid probably will just have fun w/ it.
You choice for the 235 over the 135 was a good one. I think the 235 is an impressive package for its price. Let me know how you like it after u break it in.
For right now he will be using it for his video games and CD/DVD playback, so he should be all right. He's almost 15 now, (the H/K is his B-day present) hopefully it will last him into college.I've got him interested in us building some DIY speaker kits, guess that will be next on the agenda.
