I'm redeeming points to purchase a home theatre system, so my choices are limited. I can 'afford' a Denon AVR-2105 7.1 channel receiver, and for speakers a set of Polk RM6750 5.1 channel speakers, upgradeable to 7.1. My question is will these go together? What specs would be helpful to determine if this would result in a good sound? Many thanks as I have to make a decision quickly and have little idea as to the technical merits of this decision. Thanks. Rick.

Looks like a good set up. The Denon receiver has an amazing number of features for a HT receiver at that price level. I like the fact that it has pre out for all channels, allowing you to upgrade the amplifiers in the future if you decide to get better speakers and an eight layer remote with a decent layout. Don't worry about the specs, they will cause more uncertainty than necessary for the non-hobbiest, and are certainly within the range of good compatibility. The polk speakers are typical of mini HT speakers and are of decent quality for HT listening, however, this is where you would upgrade first if you find yourself wanting better sound in time. Get better main fronts, at least 6" 2-ways for a fuller, more dynamic and relaxed sound quality, ( move the old sat fronts to the surround backs ), then a better center, then a bigger-better-deeper-tighter-mopower sub, then then some dipolar surrounds for the sides and bipolar surround backs. By the time you make all these upgrades you'll be making more money and can sell the speakers to someone who'll start over with the same process in mind. Then you'll get the better amp, a wife, kids, pets .....and then your poor again, but at least you'll have a good system!!
Thanks to both of you. Very helpful!
Don't go for anything less than a 7.1 receiver/processor (the Denon is a very good choice), even if you have to upgrade the 5.1 speakers to 7.1 speakers later on.Not familiar with today's Polk "sound" (last Polk speakers I heard were the SDA-SRS Reference speakers from the '80s), so I can't comment on them.
