I am going to buy the Denon AVR-985S receiver, with the Sony DVP-NC875V/S DVD player and the Sony SA-VE367T speaker system. Can anyone please give me some pros and cons to this potential system...I am very new at this and am open to suggestions. I'm dead set on the receiver since it's the cheapest one with an adjustable audio delay, which I need. PLEASE be as specific as possible and don't hold back.
Follow Ups:
I recently set up an inexpensive A/V/gaming system for my son. He already had an HSU-STF2 subwoofer, and we were able to get the matching HSU Ventriloquist VT-12 satellite speaker system, which is similar in size and price to the Sony HTIB system you are looking at. Even though the Ventriloquists had their moments with certain limited well-recorded stereo material, they couldn't come close to the sound of my main HT system, when it came to surround playback. And my system consists of a mis-matched combination of audiophile stereo speakers and mid priced HT center and sides. My suggestion to you is, first just buy a pair of higher quality speakers. Then later, when you can afford it, the matching center and sides. You can always run the receiver in different configurations, (phantom, 3-channel surround) until you get fully equipped.
I agree with the others, pick other speakers. Also put aside some money for decent speaker wire for the fronts at least.
Receiver and CDP/DVD player, fine choices. Speakers.... what's your budget? Maybe try some small Maggie's as rico noted. If you really want box speakers try some small PSB's, Energy's, B&W's..... I think you can do ALOT better than the Sony speakers.
I think you'd find the cheaper Magnepan speakers a better buy and far more involving and accurate.
What do I need to look for in speakers? I'm paying around $700 for the receiver and DVD player, and the speakers were going to be an additional $200. How much more do I need to sink into the speakers? Also, I bought some Monster XP-CL speaker wire, will that be good enough??
You can see the models and prices on the Magnepan web site, I believe.
