We're close to buying. Most all LCD's do not fit our desired size, (minimum 42"). It looks like it's between entry level EDTV plasma or HDTV DLP. The plasma is attractive due to the hang on the wall option. However, we are still going to have an audio rack below it and I'm not opposed to getting a new rack to hold the audio and the DLP TV, (the DLP from Samsung we are looking at is only 14.5 inches deep).
The DLP looks wonderful. Seems brighter than the possible Zenith or Samsung plasma we are looking at. The HD is nicer than ED, (we have a EDTV plasma in our upstairs right now).
The plasma concerns me due to burn-in. I see it on our current plasma and it's less than a year old. However, DLP is new to me. I hear issues of "rainbow" when your eyes blink watching it. Is this real? Can some DLP owners share their thoughts? At first glance the DLP really looks impressive and better than the entry level EDTV plasmas.
At present the DLP of choice, (due to cost), is the Samsung HL-P4663W. Your thoughts please...

Yes, the rainbow effects are *very* real... *IF* you see them (like I do). I purchased a relatively new model Samsung 50 inch pedestal DLP set (AKA "The Kirk"), and I found out the hard way that I see the rainbows (and even moreso than most who do). Watching the set when light objects/flashes or motion were on dark backrounds was almost unbearable, and gave me terrible headaches and eye strain.
This unfortunately is not just specific to Samsung... It is pretty much *all* DLP RPTVs. Any that use one DLP chip and a color wheel have the problem (there are some super high-end front DLP projectors that use 3 chips with no issues at all). The good news is less than 10% of the population see them. I advise you to look at dark films that have lights popping up in them before buying... and bring others with you that will be watching the set regularly (as they may see them and you don't). Star Trek Insurrection was the worst movie offender for me... After watching that one on my Sammy, I went directly to Circuit City to arrange for a trade-in. I ended up with a Sony 50 inch LCD RPTV that I like, but wish I could have kept the Sammy (I really loved the look of that set)... :-(

  The newer generation DLP sets have improvments to reduce /eliminate the rainbow effect. Sets are now using the DP3, and even better, the DP2+, such as Toshiba, Panasonic & Mitsu. I'm presently in the market for a 50" RPTV myself, & have seen some astounding PQ on several of these sets. Also JVC came out with a new generation LCOS design that is also quite breathtaking. To get a similar PQ w/ LCD you would have to spend $1000 more & deal with burn in at some point.

Got the HL-P5063 last summer and am very satisfied. HD picture quality is comparable to a friend's LG 50" plasma, and as you said, no burn-in worries.

DLP isn't the way to go it has better luminance yes but does cause some visual hotspots when you move, also a slow go when powering up. major repair complaints on these units.
New 45" or better LCD's now share 1920 x 1080 resolution & no burn in issues....+ 800:1 contrast....
