You may have tried this but isn't there an item on the setup menu for the TV which turns OFF the speakers? Most have such an option.

access the MENU, then > SETUP > SYSTEM IN/OUT > SPEAKERS > then a choice of NORMAL, CENTER IN, and OFF.
