I'm looking at getting a Sony WEGA TV in 32" or 36". My room is 12' 4" wide,, and with the size of the TV and couch I figured the screen will be about 8-9' away. Is a 36" an overkill in your opinion??
Thanks for your time, this is a question that has been driving me nuts!!!
the rule of thumb i read on Etown.com by russ hershelmen
The right screen size: Sit in your regular listening chair. Measure the distance from your eye to the front of your TV screen. Got it? Now divide that number in half. (Example: viewing distance: 10 feet. Half of 10 feet = 5 feet). All set? Surprise! If you truly want an immersive home theater experience, the number you're looking at (half the seating distance) should be the diagonal measurement of your TV screen. You say it isn't? Time to get a bigger screen! The whole story gave some interesting facts. by the way i was looking at a wega 36 xbr, and a toshbia 36 inch dvtv hooked to a progresive scan dvd blew the sony picture away. the 36 inch wega will not do progresive scan. wait for the new wega or get digital. you can sit as close as you want
I sit 7ft from a 35" JVC (will be replaced this year) and have been for 10 year's and it's been great. Once I got used to it, I couldn't go back to any thing smaller.
t.v. size can be any size regardless of size don't you want to have the big screen no such thing as overkillstick with the 36" tube you'll be more than happy, or go all out and think about High Definition Widescreen but then you'll have to consider the price difference.
I sit about 9 feet away from my 36 incher and love it. No problems at all and the impact of the screen size is quite evident. Wonderful!
A general rule for optimum viewing that I have found to be accurate is to sit "2 1/2 to 4 times the diagonal of the screen away from the set". For a 35 inch screen that equates to about 8 3/4 feet to 11 2/3 feet. Closer thanb the 8 3/4 feet and the scan lines will become very obvious - farther than 11 2/3 feet and you lose the impact of a larger screen size. I have a 53 inch Hitachi which I view from about 12 feet. 2 1/2 times 53 inches is a little over 11 feet.. I could have bought the 61 inch Hitachi but it would have been too big for the room ..Bob L.
How does this rule change with a 16:9 aspect set?Tom
hi,
what Estes said about what CR said applies to old style tvs. The thing that makes the Wega so damn good is you have to get very, very close to
have problems. If local tv is slightly less than perfect, pffft, you are gonna love that thing. Btw, i do like pizza; and when did you say you were watching Matrix?
Late,
How did you know that The Matrix is my foavortie!!!!
My girlfried got my a DVD player with The Matrix as a bonus!!!
Thanks for the great advice!!! It looks like a 36" WEGA is in my future!!!
i am serious!
i know a elderly gentleman who got a 32" Wega. couldn't get it out of the box, called a very strong friend of mine, who called a friend of his! And the three of them got it out of the box.
That's Covered!!!The Boys are not getting beers and Pizza for just showing up. They are going to earn it!!! And I'm using Metro wire shelving which can handle up to 800 lbs per self. The 24" x 42" shelf will house a 36" WEGA with less than an inch to spare next to each pole. I plan to have 4 - 5 guys ready for that maneuver!
Checkout www.industrialhouse.com for a great source of Metro Shelves.
If it takes more than three people to install, you guys are wimps! Three to get it out of the box, and two to put it (36XBR200, 217 lb.) up on a 33 in. high shelf (connect marked cables in the rear before lifting it into place). There is a slight groove under each side of the set for a hand grip.
What I said applies to the Wega if you are using cable!! Everyone of the Wegs I have seen run with a vcr or cable looks horrible (it has too, it is showing you what you get!). However, off air broadcasts with a good antenna and downlead will match or beat a small dish on the Sony. The question is, do you only watch DVD movies on the Wega? If so, then get the biggest you can afford. Heck for the money get a rear projection TV where the screen is even bigger! HOWEVER, if broadcast TV is the main thing, then some caution is in order. Yes and make sure your friends are ripped!!
hi,
this will be an ongoing problem for the next decade, and possibly longer. While there will be a growing tide of hi quality video feeds;
there will be a lot broadcast under the old NTSC standard. Not sure if the WEGA includes a line doubler; but my feeling is that this will NOT be an accesory during the transistion. A decent line doubler will make the NTSC
stuff passable; without it.... things could get ugly.
I sit 12 feet from a 32 inch Wega XBR set in my home, with excellent results, I originally wanted 36 or a 52, but larger sizes did not fit with speakers next to the TV. When the 32" arrived for aesthetic reasons I was glad I did not get the 36". They look a lot bigger in a home than in the showroom. That said I am sure a 36” would look great from 8’, When I play with my kid a few feet away form the screen the picture still looks terrific. Try for yourself at a dealer, be sure you set the TV to movie mode.
For what it's worth, I sit about 8ft. from a Sony trinitron 35" and I've never felt like it was overkill or thought that it looked grainy. I watch regular cable and DVD's all the time.RichardH
According to Consumer Reports and my experience you have to be a least 10 feet away for a 32 inch TV. 36 would definately be overkill. sit too close and everything looks grainy. I would suggest using high quality cables and getting the gray scale adjusted.
