Most of the Set Top Boxes will downconvert the HD signal to an SD signal (one a VCR can handle). This is the simplest and cheapest way to record the program. However, it won't be HD -- it will be SD. The next cheapest is to get something like the HD TiVO boxes with HD recording capability for real HD recording.

Or, if you have a really fast and expensive computer (3.xGHz, Windows XP, Pentium 4, etc), you can use it to record HD (1080i and 720p) programs from your STB with Windows Media 9 (aka VC-9). Check out Microsoft's site if you want to know more.
