I have avoided a 7.1 setup as I use Magnepans and my room would end up looking like Stonehenge. But I do use a phantom center and my pre/pro can convert 5.1 into 6.1 (both Dolby Digital and DTS) using a phantom rear center as well (i.e., four speakers and six channels (plus sub)). In A/B-ing the 5 versus the 6 I found that the 6 has more "fill" and a greater sense of surround.

cool, what i needed to know...now, where do you put the rear centre?do you use same model as rears or do you use another centre specific speaker? i am thinking it must awkward to place...
Again, there is NO rear center. I have a phantom front center and a phantom rear center.
I have my rear center speaker on a bookshelf which is behind my sitting position on the rear wall. Its a regular 2-way (single midwoofer and tweeter) and its a different manufacturer from my other speakers, however my avr has speaker EQ. And 6.1 certainly has a better surround field than 5.1. I have yet to try 7.1.
