TiVo does run a custom version of Linux, with a propriatary filesystem and video format. It's been hacked to death, people have been putting removable hard drives, ethernet adapters and all kinds of crazy addons for a long time. Here's are some good starter pages:http://lists.saigon.com/vault/tivo/

Ok, I guess I'm ignorant, but the site you pointed me to seems to mention tivo a lot, but Dish net almost none. Am I to consider them to be one and the same?
As far as I know a Dish network Tivo is just a Tivo with a Dish tuner built in. Do some googling, I've only played around with the basic, off the shelf Tivo units, but they *should* be substantially similar. The only way to know for sure is to take the plunge and void your warranty :)
Thanks, I'll check it out :)
