The Oppo is not that great on the analog side, especially when compared to the better analog players. HDMI is the best use of this player (for video), but even then it has a few shortcomings. There is a long thread on AVS Forum (DVD Hardware section) that highlights a few problems that this player has when using even the HDMI output.

I read it. They only judged it on DVI. I need a player that is all region, PAL-> NTSC and has reasonable sound. I've got that now with a JVC. I'm not going to upgrade unless I can get all of the above plus upconverting, without requiring digital out. That limits my choices.
I can wait.

Well if you got a DVI, or HDMI input on your TV you can get all that and it is NTSC/PAL. If you only have composite or component inputs on your tv you wont be upsampling to any thing. YMMV

But the TV "upconverts" via PixelPlus. Works OK on the JVC for PAL> NTSC.
If you find an all region PAL> NTSC better than JVC post here. I'm in the exact same boat.
That does all that and upconverts via componant out is the Momitsu V880-DX. I've been debating that one for a while. Yes, I've read the threads, and still haven't decided, since I don't know if it is better than the JVC. I should probably assume it is if there is upconverting(?). Its quirky even if they did get some of the bugs out of the earlier version.

I don't know what to make of this player. The threads at avs put me off of this player for now. I hate "buggy" electronics. It's one area of my life where I want to plug things and and just have them work.I also concluded the Philips player that came out last year was too quirky as well.
Since my screen itsn't very big and my TV does a pretty good job upconverting, I'm sticking to my Pany and my JVC for now.
...is the region-free/PAL> NTSC conversion.I still use my trusty RP91 on the 34" Philips. This set has no DVI, but OTOH, it does have upconversion through PixelPlus...so...maybe....
Don't have much interest in this as a music spinner.
Thanks for posting the thread. When I get ambutious I'll give it a read.
Well I can tell you that hooking it up to a high def LCD with the HDMI is amazing, but the component video is excellent and as good as any player I've had from $400 0n down. including the Toshiba SD4700
DVDA player from 2001 and the pioneer universal 563. and damn this is the only player that allows you to adjust the sharpness, bright, and contrast if need be. Short of that you would have to jump to the Denon at $600, or higher. If there is one out there that plays everything but sacd with this build quality and features like th Oppo
for $200 or less I want to know what it is? If you look at the DVD Benchmarks they all did very poor on the HDMI side compared to the Oppo and your right they didn't test it on composite, or component, but I wonder how many on the AVS forum have actually used this player. I bet not many. Its better than the Pioneer 563 and the toshiba sd 4700, oh and my sony dvd player. YMMV
So, what would you reccommmend that can play DVD-A/V, SACD, SVD, and has DVI output...and maybe HDCD decoding (not that important)?
