Since I don't have cable TV (I recognize that only cave men refuse to get cable!), I am considering purchasing the Sony DHG-HDD250 recorder.I am trying to "future proof" myself in this purchase, at least for the near future . . .
Here is my question I need help on: there is one HDMI output as well as Component-video high-definition outputs.
So when I get a display device in the future, I will get one with HDMI, and hook the Sony DVR directly up to the display device.
I assume that component video high definition output is just breaking the signal into 3 parts), and NOT on par with HDMI. Correct?
If so, then I will need purchase a display device that has two HDMI inputs: one for DVR, and one for upconverting DVD player (or as the case may be, HD/blu-ray DVD player).
Is my understanding flawed? Next question: are they making plasma or LCD displays with two HDMI inputs? Thanking you in advance for your help.
Follow Ups:
You can get a DVI-to-HDMI cable but will have to run separate cables for the audio. Later you can use a 'hub device' that the recorders, etc plug into and are then routed to the TV input(s)
The Hitachi Cinema Series and Director Series have dual HDMI inputs
1. In general, you seem to understand what's coming (as far as we know now).2. Without cable (or satellite), what will you be recording with the DVR?
3. I do not know of any dual HDMI-input displays but (a) they may exist, (b) they will exist shortly and by the time you are really in the market, and (c) AVR receivers will have HDMI switching by then.
4. "future proof" is impossible.
"Without cable (or satellite), what will you be recording with the DVR?"Good question. There are some rare shows on major networks (CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC) that I would record just to eliminate commercials and time shift. But I agree, not much. I still use a VCR to good purpose.
It seems that most of my TV watching is PBS--KERA, channel 13 in Dallas/Ft Worth area.
I may even break down someday and get satellite or cable, but when I look at the listing in the TV guide, I don't see much that interests me on a consistent basis.
"future proof" is impossible"
agreed--I just thought that if I buy a DVR recorder, might as well get one that will record high definition programming at this point, even if most of my recording for the next few years is SD.

I know the 50" non-Elite models have 2 HDMI inputs (and I'm sure the Elite's do as well).
