1. In general, you seem to understand what's coming (as far as we know now).2. Without cable (or satellite), what will you be recording with the DVR?
3. I do not know of any dual HDMI-input displays but (a) they may exist, (b) they will exist shortly and by the time you are really in the market, and (c) AVR receivers will have HDMI switching by then.
4. "future proof" is impossible.
Follow Ups:
"Without cable (or satellite), what will you be recording with the DVR?"Good question. There are some rare shows on major networks (CBS, NBC, Fox, ABC) that I would record just to eliminate commercials and time shift. But I agree, not much. I still use a VCR to good purpose.
It seems that most of my TV watching is PBS--KERA, channel 13 in Dallas/Ft Worth area.
I may even break down someday and get satellite or cable, but when I look at the listing in the TV guide, I don't see much that interests me on a consistent basis.

agreed--I just thought that if I buy a DVR recorder, might as well get one that will record high definition programming at this point, even if most of my recording for the next few years is SD.

I know the 50" non-Elite models have 2 HDMI inputs (and I'm sure the Elite's do as well).
