When I ran a separate DAC and transport, I used a couple of devices from Audience Technologies called the Tactic and the Audit. One had a battery bias which was supposed to raise the digital audio signal above ground, and the other had a digital repeating device which supposedly gave a stronger signal being right at the receptor. It worked well but I no longer use a converter and so they sat around for a couple of years.
At any rate I elected to see if they would work on the digital signal to my receiver. They work fabulously, and I have greatly enhanced sound with tremendous detail and nuance. The surprising thing though is that my picture to my Marantz 50" plasma has significantly improved also. This, despite the fact that I run a DVI cable directly from the Marantz DV 8400 to the plasma, has me extremely puzzled. I get much better contrast, white levels, and fine details in the picture. Everything is much more three dimensional. Colors are significantly fuller and almost have an iridescent glow to them when viewing animation.
Anybody have any ideas? The receiver is a Marantz SR 8200, BTW.
Follow Ups:
The Tactic, and Audit will also work on AC3, and DTS audio data streams. Try hooking yours up to the digital out of your DVD player, and then put on one your favorite movies.TACTIC = T(ransmissiom) A(peture) C(ompensated) T(ransformer) I(nterface) C(oupling) ... breaks ground planes between components, common mode noise rejection, provides isolation from both input linearity's, and impedance mismatches at DAC (reflection), and Pulse Transformer Isolation, allows reduction of noise caused by ground loops, digital circuits, and other sources of RFI
AUDIT = A(ctive) U(nidirectional) D(igital) I(nterface) T(ermination)... Absorbs signal reflection from non resistive input loads. Removes common mode noise caused by ground loops, circuit noise, and RFI.
Removal of noise, and reflections products reduces jitter, and dramatically improves ambiance detail, and resolution ... also improves dynamics, and articulation of high, and low frequency transients
So says their literature, and my ears. Everything sound more natural, and less digital (fatiguing).
I've even used these doubled up ... 2 Tactics back to back, then my PAD Dominus digital cable, then 2 Audits in series back to back with very positive results.
My wild guess is your Tactic, and Audit are breaking the connection/communication between your receiver and your cable box. All digtial components put out degrading noise on the back side due to their normal operation. Your Tactic and Audit are most likely isolating this back side noise, and is preventing it from being injected back into your cable box's power supplies (cleaner power = cleaner picture) were it can degrade the picture quality being fed via your DVI cable.
Or ... it just "MAGIC"
Interesting, but on my receiver I do not have any other video source hooked up, just the DVD player. The DVD player sends a video signal via an DVI cable directly to the plasma. DVD player has been slightly modifiec by the addition os ERS in order to reduce the RFI and it works in a significantly noticeable way.
I am using the Audit and Tactic on the digital output to the receiver, whioch is the only connection from the DVD player to the receiver. The receiver and DVD player are on separate PLC's.
So it seems that by your theorizing the breaking of the ground is the most important part. Somehow the digital talkback from the receiver may actually affecting the video quality. I will try just removing the Tactic to check. Thanks,
The point I was trying to make is that, the switching power supply, oscillating clocks that set the timing, and Dac's in your receiver can give off noise which is picked up in the ground planes of your receiver.Seeing as the shield in your digital IC is also tied to the chassis ground via the chassis RCA, it will pick up this noise from the receiver, and transmit it back to the DVD player, via the digital IC's shield, where it will be reintroduced back into the DVD's ground, and eventually into the power supply.
When power is pulled for the video circuits, it is now pulling power along with the noise that has been reintroduced into the DVD power supply from your receiver, and hence degrades the video picture.
By installing your Audit and Tactic, you break this noise chain, and your DVD never sees the grunge that your receiver is producing, thus feeding cleaner power to the video circuits = an improved picture.
No doubt that the ERS paper is doing it's work, but the ERS is defending against AIR BORN EMI/RFI. The effects seem to be complimentary, and accumlative.
You have one of the older non powered Audits, they also come in a powered version, I have one of each.
Enjoy your new found enhancement. I wouldn't be with out mine
