Hi Barry :I suppose you could start with a receiver as your central processor and amplification gear( separates cost much more , although provide better sound ). There are many options available from decent brands . Look for a DD Receiver with improvement capabilities ( pre out for all channels ; switching capability ; S-video ; digital inputs ; binding post etc.)
(1) Denon AVR-3300 ............... $999.00
(2) Yamaha 795a .................. 700.00
(3) Onkyo TX-DS575 ............... 499.00
(4) Denon AVR-1800 ............... 499.00Choosing a receiver with a digital input ( coaxial , toslink or both )
with internal processing let you choose a DVD least expensive ( it doesn't need an internal digital processor ).(1) Pionner DV-525 .............. $ 249.00 ( has external 24/96 digital out for connection with an external DAC )
(2) Toshiba SD-2109 ............. 249.00 ( better images than sonics )
(3) Panasonic 120 ............... 279.00 ( balanced images and sonics)DO NOT forget GOOD cables . They don't need to be expensive , just reliable . Nordost , Kimber Cable , XLO , MIT and others . Check if your TV set has an S-video in . S-cable provide better images than composite ones . Verify your receiver as well for switching compatibility.
Match your speakers . They don't need to be expensive neither but they need to has similar timbral characteristics . The size of your room and the sensitivity of the speakers have to be considered here . Ask your dealer and provide your listening room measurements and your taste on video and music.
Good speakers combination can be found from Companies like :
(1) Sound Dynamics , (2) B&W , (3) Energy , (4) Paradign , (5) Mirage
(6) Definitive Technology and others. Their cost vary depending of the models an options ( full range , subwoofer , satelites/subwoofer comb , etc )A GOOD DEALER , the one who take the time to set you a visit with an specific set-up and time to spare with your questions , will help you . $2,000-2,500 is not a huge amount of money but it can bring you to a cruise at the Carribean or give you many pleasent hours in front of your system with your family , SO TAKE your time . Good luck .
