As for the Macrovision free DVD player, I deliberately picked one up used about a year ago. It's one of the early Sony DVD-S7000 players with an internal switch that defeats Macrovision. I can make perfect VHS copies from this DVD player w/o the Macrovision fading / color shifting. I understand there are a handful of companies that sell current model DVD players modified to defeat Macrovision and region codes.
