Hi there! I have two Toshiba tv's... had a blackout in my area... and when the power came back one doesnt work at all. It just ticks and there is not even a power indicator light to indicate its on. The other still plays but the picture is all jittery and shrank. There is about 3" of black border around the picture. Both tv's are just over a year old and Toshiba said they are not covered under warranty. Everything else in my house is fine.... including my 15 year old Phillips tv in the kitchen. Seems this blackout only broke the Toshiba's.
I have found a local place to make a house call next week but does anyone have an idea what actually happened? How to avoid in the future and maybe even know if there is a fix for this without having a repairman stop over?

Disconnecting the units is the best protection. I have a Panamax unit in one of my systems that does that automatically when the voltage drops (or surges) and restores it only when regular voltage is reestablished and stabilized.
When suffering from a black out it is a good idea to unplug all appliances. The turn on surge is what kills many pieces, as the surge is usually at a much higher voltage.
Surge protectors are nice, and as the country's power supply becomes more taxed, I would consider them mandatory for all valuable gear.
We just bought a 60" Sony Grand Wega. I have it plugged into a powervar line conditioner. We used AmEx CC to buy all 3 HDTV sets. By using Amex you double the standard 1 year factory warranty. A good thing. I also suggest searching for a good price for a RepairTech 5 year warranty on your next set. A 5 year RepairTech warranty with free replacement if it dies for good cost me only $349. The good thing about a repairtech warranty is it does not start until the facory warranty period is over. So we are covered out for the next six or seven years. I would NEVER buy a warranty from CC or BB. Their warranty for 2 years runs at the same time as the factory one on our two new small 30" HDTV's we got for our bedrooms. When I told the manager that Amex doubles my warranty and buying your warranty would not give me any longer protections than the factory warranty. His reply was "Well, we will give you in-house warranty repair." So does repairtech. You gotta pretect your TV's like you do your stereo from voltage spikes. Also consider using Amex to double the standard 1 year warranty at the least on your next set. Best bet is 5 year repairtech warranty.. Good luck! John
Now you why you need something other than a $20 power bar. My experience is that having a Panamax or Monster power conditioner reduces the risks of such things happening. It could be that the power supply died in one of the TVs, which is expensive & the one place to cut manufacturing costs, where no one will see.
