My home theater uses two surge protectors in tandem. If I know a lightning storm is coming I unplug eveything. I also unplug my computer' surge protector every time I shut it down. Last summer I learned the hard way when a lightning strike took out a power amp, two pats of my computer, and my well pump which was 12 feet underground.
Follow Ups:
1. Surge/lightning protector at the service entry point.
2. Local surge protection at the appliance.
