Dear Sirs, please excuse my poor english (I am italian).
it is my first post here.
I am in the process of abandoning the old VHS tapes for rewritable DVDs.
Then my usual question:
1) which of the two (-RW or +RW) format is better?
2) is the internal hard disk option fundamental?I would like very much to hear users' opinions.
Thank you very much indeed.Kind regards,
Follow Ups:
I don't really know the difference between -RW and +RW, but there is a post already about that.
As for the hard drive; supposedly you can rewrite on a DVD-RW about 1000 times. Basically I just leave a disc in there and erase it when I'm done. I have no interest in permanently recording anything (and if I did I'd want it on disk anyway... I think).
So for me personally I see no advantage to the internal hard drive unless you need more than a couple hours recorded without returning to your house to replace the DVD-RW. And even if I need this I just put the recorder on long play.
Dear Sir,thank you for your kind and appreciated reply.
As I wrote, I see that the price difference between recorder with HD and without is substantial.
May I ask you what model do you have and how is the quality of the recording in 4 hours recording mode? Still acceptable?Thank you very much indeed.
Kind regards,
Trust me, it's a big part of why I "settled" for a non-HD unit. Mine is a Pioneer DVR-320. Personally... I wouldn't buy the Pioneer again. I was never a Pioneer fan before, now I'm less of one (it's my first Pioneer piece of any sort). My 10 year old Sony and 2 or 3 year old Panny standard DVD players have a clearly better picture. I tweaked it a bunch in the settings, but the others still are superior.
That said, the four hour mode is more than adequote for my needs. I only time-shift so if the picture is worse I wouldn't mind. I've only used the 4 or 6 hour mode a couple times, and although the two hour is noticeably better, it's far better than the same duration recording on a VCR.
Get one with Chase Play, whatever you do!
Dear Mr. VanderMye,
thank you very much indeed for your kind and valuable reply.
Please excuse me but what does "CHASE PLAY" mean? Is it a special recording mode ?Anyway thank you very much indeed for your kind reply.
Kind regards,
You can play, fast forward (obviously only up to current time) etc. This is great if you know you'll be out when a show starts but get home part way through.
Dear Mr. VanderMye,thanks a lot again for your kind help.
Kind regards,
Hi beppe61,Welcome to the Asylum.
\\\1) which of the two (-RW or +RW) format is better?/// I知 not convinced it makes much difference.
With the introduction of multi-read drives it is certainly becoming LESS problematic.\\\2) is the internal hard disk option fundamental?/// The short answer is no, it is not fundamental. However, I use a hard-drive DVD recorder and it is so much more convenient and versatile than just a DVD disc recorder.
The new model DVD recorders will write and read BOTH +/- DVD-R/RW disc types.
I personally would not buy a DVD recorder without a hard drive. I will be buying a second DVD hard-drive recorder shortly.
Good luck

Dear Mr. Sox,thank you very much indeed for your kind and very valuable reply, and for the warm welcome to this forum.
> \\\1) which of the two (-RW or +RW) format is better?/// I知 not convinced it makes much difference. With the introduction of multi-read drives it is certainly becoming LESS problematic.
If I understand well there is no intrinsic superiority of one format over the other one. Do I understand well?
> \\\2) is the internal hard disk option fundamental?/// The short answer is no, it is not fundamental. However, I use a hard-drive DVD recorder and it is so much more convenient and versatile than just a DVD disc recorder.
So the option is very useful. I see. Unfortunately the price difference is substantial here (let's say 200 euro to 500 euro with just a 80GB HD difference. I personally think is a little too much, considering the current prices of computer HDs).
> The new model DVD recorders will write and read BOTH +/- DVD-R/RW disc types.
Yes, but I would like to take profit of some discounts on older one format only models.
> I personally would not buy a DVD recorder without a hard drive. I will be buying a second DVD hard-drive recorder shortly.
Very clear point of view. That was indeed the user opinion I was looking for. Thank you very much indeed again. Very useful reply.
Good luck

Am I on "Candid Camera"?

> If I understand well there is no intrinsic superiority of one format over the other one. Do I understand well?DVD+RW is a little more resistant to problems while burning, and has a couple other nice features that DVD-RW doesn't have.
DVD-RW, being an older technology, is playable in more home DVD drives. Only the most recent standalone DVD players can read DVD+R media.
Of course, if you're buying a standalone DVD recorder, and you don't care about sharing your DVD's, DVD+R is fine.
/*Music is subjective. Sound is not.*/
Stand-alone DVD recorders don't have this option, but many computer DVD writers can change the book-type/bit-setting (only available for the +R format) so that the +R burned disc is recorded as a -ROM disc (which all stand-alone DVD players "see" as a regular movie DVD).Because of this option (the DVD-ROM feature of +R), the compatibility issue actually favors the +R format due to the fact that the majority of +R stand-alone players won't play -R at all.
.
Dear Sir,thank you very much. I am recovering very valuable informations from experts like you to make a wise buy.
Thank you to all.
You are great and very kind.Kind regards,
