I don't really know the difference between -RW and +RW, but there is a post already about that.
As for the hard drive; supposedly you can rewrite on a DVD-RW about 1000 times. Basically I just leave a disc in there and erase it when I'm done. I have no interest in permanently recording anything (and if I did I'd want it on disk anyway... I think).
So for me personally I see no advantage to the internal hard drive unless you need more than a couple hours recorded without returning to your house to replace the DVD-RW. And even if I need this I just put the recorder on long play.

Dear Sir,thank you for your kind and appreciated reply.
As I wrote, I see that the price difference between recorder with HD and without is substantial.
May I ask you what model do you have and how is the quality of the recording in 4 hours recording mode? Still acceptable?Thank you very much indeed.
Kind regards,
Trust me, it's a big part of why I "settled" for a non-HD unit. Mine is a Pioneer DVR-320. Personally... I wouldn't buy the Pioneer again. I was never a Pioneer fan before, now I'm less of one (it's my first Pioneer piece of any sort). My 10 year old Sony and 2 or 3 year old Panny standard DVD players have a clearly better picture. I tweaked it a bunch in the settings, but the others still are superior.
That said, the four hour mode is more than adequote for my needs. I only time-shift so if the picture is worse I wouldn't mind. I've only used the 4 or 6 hour mode a couple times, and although the two hour is noticeably better, it's far better than the same duration recording on a VCR.
Get one with Chase Play, whatever you do!
Dear Mr. VanderMye,
thank you very much indeed for your kind and valuable reply.
Please excuse me but what does "CHASE PLAY" mean? Is it a special recording mode ?Anyway thank you very much indeed for your kind reply.
Kind regards,
You can play, fast forward (obviously only up to current time) etc. This is great if you know you'll be out when a show starts but get home part way through.
Dear Mr. VanderMye,thanks a lot again for your kind help.
