I always clean rental discs before I play them. I seem to have fewer problems that way. My Sony and Arcam DVD players have never had problems playing any disc that was cleaned.

I also have a DV45A, and it's a bit more finicky. I don't think the error correction is as good with the Pioneer transport as it is with some others.
