The concept of a HDD DVD recorder is highly appealing - despite the multiple formats, which does'nt appear to be of great concern.Researching Net buzz on some models has turned up:
The TV Guide programming feature (sub-contracted/co-branded through one "Gemstar" company), appears to be highly iffy. Read of a model that had *NO manual programming, so if the TV Guide thingie didn't function...sorry. (!)Fan noise. Yeah, they have fans. Read of one model in which the fan ran 24/7, even when the unit was turned off. (!!) In general, fan noise was a common complaint. And you aren't going to see fan noise specs from manufacturer.
All of the better models have the same Audio and Video DAC specs, *except the Sonys, which have the better Video DAC specs, but a lesser Audio DAC spec.
Follow Ups:
..........………They are Panasonics and my 9 & 11 year olds can use them as can my wife. (and me too)We don't find fan noise an issue.
I would think they may well be cheaper in a year or so and no doubt possible better.
Only you know your own priorities and what you are willing to spend on any given product.
Good luck

...NEXT year. :)
The fan noise on my Pioneer DVR-320 (non-HDD DVD recorder) is there, but very low. Not noticeable during movie watching. If it were my only player (music also) I couldn't live with it however.
