Greeting All,I just purchased a new DVD player (Panasonic SD97)and am now looking to run everything through proper cables. My set up is Samsung DLP 50" with 1 DVI input - sources are HD Cable box & DVD player each with HDMI outputs. I am currently running componant hook-ups for both.
I would like to run HDMI/DVI cables via a video switcher, however I don't really want to spend $250 on a video switcher. I found a passive unit that looks like it will do everything I need.
Any down sides to passive in the digital video world - i will be running very short cable runs of no more then 1 meter.

Thanks,
MH

With great hope I connected up everything via DVI cable, my DISH 811 HD receiver and my Zenith 318 upconverting DVI DVD player to my Sony Grand Wega LCD via DVI.Nothing, no picture. I checked all the connections, but no picture, from input 1 or 2. The push-buttons are real piece of work BTW displaying vague feel and no crisp detents. If I don't touch anything and watch a bit, the TV will sometimes spontaneously show some random colors with flicker for one second then nothing again.
This thing is going back. I'm sure it may be just my unit that's defective, but the overall build quality, especially the vaglue push-buttons don't inspire me to order a replacement.
I guess I'll stick it out with component w/ DVD player until a cheaper electronic switcher becomes available...
in the mail today. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for one extra DVI cable to arrive before I can hook up everything. As long as the total cable length remains reasonable and contacts secure, it should be no problem.
Other than the cheap price, the reason I bought this over receivers that have HDMI switching (no one has DVI switching) or expensive electronic HDMI switchers is the fact passive, mechanical switcher like this one will not suffer from the often-reported HDMI/DVI handoff/HDCP problems.
