Here's the setup: Marantz SR-8000 receiver, Onkyo Integra DPS-5 DVD player, Straight Wire Silver Link II 75 ohm coax cable, Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DVD. The SR-8000 has a built-in DTS decoder and the DPS-5 can send the DTS signal out via digital bitstream. The DPS-5 is connected to the SR-8000 via the coax cable and is recognized by the receiver via digital coax input #1. The DPS-5 is defaulted to
bitstream out. We have been able to play DD 5.1 material (Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance", "The Fifth Element", etc.) without problems. Occasionally,
we need to press the Audio button for the DVD player to switch from 2 channel mode to 5.1.We have been attempting to play "Hell Freezes Over", which is DTS, but it's a no go. After the video starts in 2 channel (PCM) mode, I attempt to
change it to DTS mode (which on the DPS-5 is either 5.1 or 6 ch). It won't let me. I get a symbol in the right-hand corner indicating that I can't do
it.The strange part is that I can stop the DVD, press the Audio button, and switch to 6 ch mode. Once I press play to continue the video, it switches
back to 2 channel mode (actually PCM/DPL mode). I tried to enter the menu on the DVD itself, but all I seem to be able to do is either start the
video or select an individual song on the DVD.This one has got me stumped! What am I overlooking here?
BUY I REAL DVD PLAYER
The DVD player works just fine. It's the DVD "Hell Freezes Over" that has the problem. Most DTS DVD's let you change the audio mode on the fly. This one does not FOR ALL DVD PLAYERS. Period!
i have a similar set-up without this problem , only dif. is the rec. - it's an INTEGRA DTR-7
If you had looked lower in this thread, you would have noticed that the solution to this problem had to with the menu selection on the DVD disc via the DVD player. It had nothing to do with the receiver.*** NOTE TO THE MODERATORS ***
I was posting on the Audio Review forum and I had made a comment about a hiss problem we encountered with the Onkyo Integra DTR-7. Soon after, I was continuously bombarded with flames by a particular individual, even on posts that did not mention the DTR-7 (which was 95% of them).
I mention this because of the post I am now responding to. It is written suspiciously like the one's I received before (without the direct flaming or mentioning of bodily-functions here), with a time of posting right around when the other posts were received. If you have any way to confirm this individual's IP address to make sure this is a legit post, I would appreciate it.
If it turns out that this individual starts to flame my posts, please feel free to delete any of my posts along with his responses. I do not think that the Audio Asylum visitors should be subjected to these types of posts.
The Eagles Hell Freezes Over DVD first play menu has a selection between PCM (default) and DTS. If you don't select it here, you may not be able to switch audio streams during playback. If you're not seeing the first play menu selection, you may have to put in a different DVD (pick anything) into your DVD player, and then put in the Hell Freezes Over DVD. Hope this helps!

I tried a different DVD and then switched back, but I still had the same problem. Or so I thought! I had seen the initial screen that states that you need a DTS-capable DVD player and a DTS decoder somewhere in the system, but what I hadn't noticed was that the PCM "icon" at the top was highlighted and the DTS "icon" was not. (This is our first DTS DVD!) I hit the left arrow key and selected DTS and now it works. :)One quirk with my DVD player. Once it started in DTS mode, I quickly hit the forward key to the 5th chapter, which is the first song "Hotel California". For whatever reason, my DVD player was back into 2 channel mode. I re-inserted the DVD, selected DTS, and then let the movie enter into the 1st chapter completely. After about 15 seconds, I was able to hit forward, stop-and-restart, etc. without it leaving DTS mode. Odd!
Thanks for your help! Your suggestion gave me a solid clue as to my solution.
Glad to hear the problem is resolved. The Eagles:HFO placement of the DTS/PCM audio selection in a first play menu is just plain ridiculous. BTW, the Eagles:HFO has excellent audio mastering and processing -- some might say too much so :-) -- but IMHO it beats out the Eric Clapton Unplugged DD5.1 DVD I was listening to last night.
