I'm currently running 5.1, primarily because I'm loath to upgrade the processor at this time. My current Pre/pro has a 7.1 mode which allows me to feed each surround channel feed to a L/R center plus a L/R rear (the processor simply divides the 5.1 rear info to the 4 side/rear channels. Since my room is a rectangular 26x19, I might benefit from this configuration. The downside is I currently have only 5.1 channels of amplification because I'm loath to add channels because of cost. And if I did go 7.1 (or 6.1), it might actually work better if I went to 1/2 rear centers instead of 2 side fills. A lot will depend on the capabilities of the (future) processor and room requirements.
Trying to support multichannel DVD-A/SACD at the same time introduces other speaker configuration/placement constraints.
