I dont want video to intrude on my audio system for a number of reasons, mainly that I dont watch that many vids. However, I would like something more than just the TV. Does anyone know of a good low cost HT setup? It's such a low priority that I don't mind doing the mass market routine and getting a Sony, Yamaha or such. Music will NOT be played on this system. Just want something better than the speakers in my Sony TV, and a good reasonable DVD player.
I just upgraded my POS Pioneer stereo reciever to this Yamaha. I love it for both its price and its sound. The Pioneer was rated at 100w, I could turn it up only about 1/3 before the sound outta my JBL 2600s became too horid to stand. With this 70w Yamaha's low distortion will take my JBLs to thier limit and sound better than the Pioneer was capible of at any volume.
Its only DPL but has 5.1 inputs and preouts for every channel but the mains so there is upgradability.
Anyway at $240 at BestBuy there isn't anything that can even come close.

A lot of folks use mass market receivers for HT and don't see much need for more. John's made several positive comments on the system linked below.
What's your budget? Are you looking for Dolby digital or DTS? 5 channel sound or just to replace your TV speakers??

budget: as low as I can go. I would rather upgrade my audio system than spend a lot on HT. Looking to spend maybe $500 on receiver and speakers, so I realize that it will not even be tolerable on music. Would love to find a mass marketer that had an all inclusive "package" deal. I have 10 grand invested in audio but am not enough of a videophile to spend much at all. Thus any and all opinions on ultra cheap gear for HT are welcome. Dont really care whether it's Doblby, DTS or whatever. Just something to make watching my Jackie Chan movies a little more enjoyable. Thanks.
...(big f*ckin' screen:-) between your speakers,
why not just get that DVD-player alone and connect
it audio out to free inputs of your (pre)amp?
I'm not sure you'll prefer 5.1 channels via $500 set
of amp+speakers over 2 ch on your Totem+GLA.
I watch movies that way... well... no DVD, just stereo
VCP. Again, mine TV is small 21'', so I can live having
it between speakers.
Hmmm... you may add subwoofer for these $500... Jackie
Chan will thank you.:-)

I've seen receivers closeouts on various places on the net for $200-$250, SoundCity.com had a JVC receiver I think for $250, probably had DPL at least. Then scour your local electronics megachain for closeouts and sales. You can probably find some decent Infinity, AR, JBL, kind of bookshelf speakers for $250. Check out www.jandr.com or www.soundcity.com they tend to have decent prices and/or closeout items...

How Bout this, buy the cheapest decent reciever that you can find. Then visit madisound and buy 5 of their Sledgehammer coax speakers (around $37) and make/buy small sealed enclosuers for them. If That doesnt float your boat then go to rat shack and get some of there small bookshelf speakers on the cheap, they have pretty decent bass, way beter than most tv's. Just hope that the bug doesnt bite you, or youll be wasting money on small fish, when the bigger shark is out there! If you really want to have some fun try to maker your own loudspeakers Heres a link for some that cost ~140 a pair, lots of fun, and better sound than you'd think. Later
Speaking of cheap, theres a reallllyy cheap Teac integrated amp (30WPC/8ohms or 80WPC/4 ohms) that is going for $200 in jandr.com. then
you can find any $300 set of towers or bookshelfs, assuming you don't need the tuner. Probably better than your TV speakers though!
