In Reply to: Anyone using a Rel Strata III in their home theater? posted by chrisc on December 13, 2005 at 09:00:22:
I still own a REL Storm III which I believe is very similar to the Strata III but a bit larger. I'm not presently using it so it's stored in my basement covered up with a blanket.I used my Storm III in an audio-only setup using the speaker level outputs from my tube amp (CJ Premier 11a at the time). I have also used the Storm III with the LFE output from my Denon 3803 A/V processor/receiver. They both work.
I can tell you that the Storm III integrates nicely in the audio-only setup and it fills in the low bass notes but it's down firing design doesn't offer a lot of snap and impact.
For home theater use, I actually preferred laying the Storm III on it's side with the speaker firing right at me vs down onto the floor.
I find the Storm III to work very nicely in the audio-only setup but it's over kill for home theater. You can get by with a lesser sub for HT use IMHO. If you do use the Strata III for HT, try laying it on it's side with the speaker firing at you. You might prefer it that way as I did.
Follow Ups:
Thanks for the response,I use this system for both music and HT. I just went to the Sumiko website and it doesn't look like the Strata is in production anymore. Based on your comments, it sounds like perhaps the Q201e may be the best idea - it isn't down-firing and it has a defeatable low level crossover. My only worry is that my cats might want to use it as a scratching post.
If anything, some subs are overkill for music, but that's why you can (usually) dial down the bass response. My subwoofer is used strictly for the HT LFE effects. I didn't like the slight loss of transparency when I put a (non-REL) sub between the preamp and amp for music.
I've heard bigger, more expensive subs in a much smaller room and I've loved the bass impact. It made my sub "feel" very wimpish in comparison. I need to add a 2nd sub because of the room size but I also might upgrade, two (2) REL Brittania B1s are on the wish list; may even be suitable for music.
