In Reply to: Anyone using a Rel Strata III in their home theater? posted by chrisc on December 13, 2005 at 09:00:22:
I'm using a REL Strata III in my music/HT 5.1 setup, and it's fantastic. I didn't feel like messing with the speaker-level inputs and the lfe channel, so i'm only running an rca interconnect from the pre-amp to the strata. Caveat: i was much more concerned about music performance in this set-up, I don't watch very many action movies and I'm not a bass freak, so I wasn't concerned about rattling my fillings out with 2hz tones during vin diesel movies.I owned an SVS sub before, and while it was a great sub for demo-ing the Pod Race scene from Star Wars, it was slow, boomy, and inarticulate on with music. My experience with the SVS led me to look at music first, HT second when putting together my new system.

Thanks,I don't think REL markets the Strata in the US anymore (or they stopped production on them), so now I'm considering the Q201e, but it sounds like REL is the way to go here.
RELs are great as musical subs but they didn't really shine compared to the competition when it came to concussive HT LFE effects. They might have kept the line if the Brittania series showed up a bit earlier and demonstrated marketability.I'm looking into it because I'm fairly sure I could benefit from dual stereo subs with the right RELs but it also has to give me significantly better HT LFE effects. I tried a single REL Stadium III but not enough impact in my room for LFE. There is a REL Stentor III the dealer has been trying to unload for several years without success..... Maybe this sub combined with my existing sub could be a good combo for both music and HT LFE.
hmmm, well, there's always audiogon for a used strata (I bought a used one locally a couple months ago for $600). The way REL matches the amp and woofer (making sure that the amp can't drive the woofer past safe levels, etc), it makes for a pretty long-lasting sub.
