if I had the right space for it.... sigh.... I have a shot but haven't figured out how to fit a 36" or 40" XBR CRT in any of my rooms (either too small or too big for each room). Why the interest ? superb PQ and demonstrated reliability of CRT.The alleged wave of the future is 1080p. If I was starting to look now, I'd get a 1080p-capable display though it's pretty iffy if there will be any serious 1080p content anytime soon. My current display is 720p and my video processor outputs only 720p. Each converts every source (480i, 480p, 1080i and everything in between) to 720p. This has to last for several years before I can scratch that video upgrade itch.
Follow Ups:
I'm not knocking the Sony XBR picture, but Sony needs a lesson in industrial design. That has to be the ugliest box for a CRT I've ever seen. Their 30 inch models are even worse with the lighter grey.
I'm quite insistent on the black frame (at least) around the picture. My "video processor" is an HD cable box from Comcast. My DVD player has component out but doesn't do progressive scan. I don't mind that at the moment because I don't watch a lot of movies. The Panasonic is being delivered today. I have to SCHLEP the Samsung back to Best Buy myself because I didn't know any better about its weight and declined delivery. (oops). The Panny comes from Circuit City so I couldn't have the delivery people take it back for me. Oh well.
