Hello, I'm a new member here, so hello everyone.I am looking be buy a flat panel TV, around the 42 inch size. I'm trying to decide between plasma and LCD. Currently I'm leaning towards the plasmas due to cost and better picture motion. But it seems that LCD's are catching up.
I'm wondering if anyone knows or thinks that plasmas are just a passing technology and will be quickly replaced by LCDs or something. Is it a waste to buy plasma now?
I'm currently looking at the:
LG 42" Plasma HDTV (DU-42PX12X)
and the
Samsung 42" Wide Screen Flat-Panel Plasma HDTV (HPR4272)Any comments or recommendations for models will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Toshiba will be introducing SED screens early in 06. SED was developed by Canon. In simplistic terms, its an array of micro CRT-like cells. Supposed to have the PQ of plasma with none of the drawbacks and be much cheaper than plasma once production gets rolling. Reviews I've seen were impressive and have projected that SED will displace plasma.
SED will be released in Japan in '06. By March, Toshiba/Canon expects to have a 55" 1920x1080 model in Japan. SED release in the US may happen in '06, but it probably won't be until late '06.I hope they are successful with SED, but I'm only interested in the picture quality advantages that it may have over plasma. Panasonic will be releasing a 65" 1920x1080 14-bit commercial model capable of accepting a 1080p input via HDMI in Q3/Q4 '06 (maybe sooner). Toshiba/Canon might as well target the top.
Here's a very informative SED thread on AVS:
Do your research but buy something you like, take it home and enjoy. You need to go to avsforum.com - more info on TVs than you probably want but the best place for the lowdown.
You don't want a cheap TV in either LCD or plasma. Plasmas won't be outdated very soon, but I imagine something will eventually replace both technologies. Either type of set should have fairly long life. Don't believe the rubbish about plasmas burning out in 10 years.
There are pluses and minuses to both technologies. A lot depends on your room, your budget and what you're gonna watch. Unless you're talking LCD rear projection, I think the plasmas are a way ahead of LCD screens. My main objection to LCDs is the poor blacks/shadow detail as well as the trailing motion you mentioned. (Shadows are often greyish, bluish or purplish.) Either of those is a deal killer for me. The LCD RPs are better IMO than the larger thin screens, especially for the price.
If you're keen on a 42" size, my personal pick would be one of the Panasonic plasmas. Best bang for buck, good contrast ratio, very decent blacks and shadow detail (though not as good as the best CRTs). Several people here have the Pannys and are very happy. My pick of the LCDs would be the Sony RPs. , I don't really like the larger LCD flat screens.. If you can get by with a thinnish display, I'd check out the DLP and LCD RPs.
I have the 42' HD version and it rocks- $3000 out the door in most places.
