I need some help narrowing down the players.
Follow Ups:
Check the link below before making your decision. When CONFIGURED FOR MAXIMIUM IMAGE QUALITY the $200 OPPO out scores EVERY OTHER tested DVD player. When NOT so configured the $3500 Denon edges out the OPPO.
Of course, the actual picture you get is also dependent on your system, i.e., display/TV quality.
Empirically, on my highly rated Panasonic Plasma, the OPPO is clearly superior to any of my 5 others DVD players.GHM
Any suggestions for retailers or online dealers who carry the Oppo? Is it only available on-line?

The best is the Denon 5910 by at least a bit....after that, expect the Onkyo sp1000(better than 5910 and others for all audio formats), then the Denon 3910 and Pioneer 59avi/79avi.......then the Oppo.I have both the Onkyo and Oppo , and have owned both the Denon 3910 and 5900.
The Oppo is a very nice player....but be aware that it shows macro block enhance and I did see lip sync issues on some dvd's.
On a smaller display that doesn't show MB, I doubt too many would see much difference between any of these particular players.
All my comparisons were done on a 106" screen or bigger.
When configured as recommended (DVI output and Video 2) the OPPO is spectacular. Best DVD image I've ever seen.Terrific "extras" as well:
5.1 multi-channel analogue AND digital outputs
DTS decoder
HDCD
DVD-A multi channel audio
192/24 bit DACS
If money is no issue (and it usually is in my world), then the answer is probably the Denon DV-5910.There are many other players, and I assume you will connect DVD player to video display via HDMI.
There are many threads on this topic at www.avsforum.com, and I don't think there is a definitive answer on less expensive players. I do know that Bravo beats out Samsung by a mile.
Finally, look at the benchmarks in the link below--it takes a while to load, but Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity have rigorous tests they run players through. Note, e.g., the Oppo Digital - OPDV971H, which has DVI output.
happy hunting

Also note, the highest score went to the Oppo which lists for $200. I beleive it also comes with a DVI-> HDMI cable. Its also region free.
