My parents want a new tv for their front room. They will be sitting as close as 8' and as far away as 15'Their eye sight is not good anymore, so i thought a plasma tv would have a sharper picture. I'm thinking perhaps a 40" would be just the right size for them.Any suggestions to brands? I am partial to Toshiba, but am open to other ideas.I think they want HD too. Do plasmas have HD already built in so they don't have to add a receiver? Are plasmas as reliable as other type tvs? Thanks for the suggestions.

I believe the rule of thumb is about 8'-9' away from the set for a 42" screen. So 40" - 42" should be about ideal. And don't forget that as the quality of the picture improves (as with an HD program), the nearer you can sit without a problem.
Thus far, plasmas seem to be quite reliable. DLP's have had a lot of compaints. To many darn moving parts. LCD's have an issue with their back light needing to be replaced. Most message boards I read on the subject of HDTV/home theater are pretty clear that plasma is the way to go as long as it's not going to be used for extensive gaming.
Good luck.
That's pretty close to the minimum/maximum seating distances from our RPTV. We use an "L" shaped sectional sofa, and went with a Pioneer 64" HD set, which has worked out fine. Just remember the one can sit much closer to a Hi-Def picture, but if they are going to watch a lot of standard def stuff, the set should be sized for that. Here's a link with a calculator:
With the newer 720 or 1080 native resolution sets, distance is not a problem unless you are sitting within 3 feet of the set. Buy a big DLP rear projector and ease their eyes.
My parents don't want a tv too bulky that would stick out too far into the room. That's why i thought a plasma would be better. It's hard enough for them to even consider a new tv. They are old fashioned and really don't like new tvs because they look too modern! They like the tvs from the old days with the wood cabinets.
DLP rear projectors have only a 14 to 18" depth. Not as thin as a plasma, but thinner than a conventional set.
