not trolling, just asking for a friend. I don't have hi def or any new tv, mine is 12 years old. But, his children have graduated and he wants to get a "52' tv and a nice $1000 surround system" just as the linked poster from 5 years ago said. Curious how far the tech has progressed.I was thinking Panasonic XR receiver or the Yamahas reviewed so highly in TAS/Stereophile. Mated with Polks or ? speaks and a Pioneer DV 588 universal.

"I was thinking Panasonic XR receiver or the Yamahas reviewed so highly in TAS/Stereophile."I cannot speak about TAS but I do not recall such reviews in Stereophile. Do you have a reference?
I saw something I think you wrote on the convenience of the new AV receivers and their quality--it's at home, I am at work. But it's the one with that 90K turntable on the cover.
it's a Denon, not a Yamaha or Panasonic.
I was interested due to my uncle upgrading into 5.1 or more. He had Carver The Receiver and to my ear that sounded dull and lifeless. So he "upgraded" but refused to listen to me re much better gear. He was very proud when TAS wrote highly of the Yamaha.

$1000 for both speakers and receiver?Honestly, I'd probably go used at A-gon if that's the limit.
If not, for a couple hundred more I'd look at the Yammie you mentioned above and the Energy Encore surround system (you can find them pretty reasonably on-line).
Otherwise I'd look for a good used Denon or Onkyo and/or used Encores, Epos ESL-3s or suchlike. You could even get something like Cambridege Soundworks speakers for the rears.
I am gathering data for 3 people! Folks who review and post are helpful and I will research Energy. How does this compare to Polks?
I like Epos and Energy better than some of the Polks. I'd have to go back and look somewhere to remember which models are which. Some Polks aren't bad - they're sure as heck better than some of the dreck you find at BB and CC. Oh, and another great series of inexpensive speakers if you can find them used or afford them new are the Image series from PSB.The Perfect Vision had a rating on budget gear in their recommended components list - that'd definitely be worth looking up.
Part of the decision of "what speakers" depends on whether any of these people listen to music much. If they don't, I s'pose boom and crash is what they want (but not what they need, because the dialog and music soundtrack are located in the midrange).
I'd rather have a good L,R,C Dolby Pro-logic set-up that sounded really good than 5 crappy speakers and a tiny sub just to say I had surround sound.
I acquired speakers for the HT gradually, using Alon Lil' Rascals (now Nola Minis) and adding the rears last. They sound great for music AND movies. But that's just me, becuase I love music.
