I believe the rule of thumb is about 8'-9' away from the set for a 42" screen.So 40" - 42" should be about ideal. And don't forget that as the quality of the picture improves (as with an HD program), the nearer you can sit without a problem.
Thus far, plasmas seem to be quite reliable. DLP's have had a lot of compaints. To many darn moving parts. LCD's have an issue with their back light needing to be replaced. Most message boards I read on the subject of HDTV/home theater are pretty clear that plasma is the way to go as long as it's not going to be used for extensive gaming.
